The Egyptian flag consists of three horizontal stripes - red, white, and black one. In the middle of the white stripe, so called Saladins eagle is placed. It is a national symbol of Egypt and it refers to Arabic identity and independence. Saladin has become the Egyptian national hero when he managed to defeat the Crusaders and regain the city of Jerusalem in the 12th century. The eagle stares toward the left side of the flag and he holds a shield composed of three parts on his chest where two are black and one is yellow. The panel beneath the eagle bears an inscription "al-gumhurja Misr al-Arabiya", which means the Arab Republic of Egypt. Interpretation of the tricolor is as follows: red refers to bloodshed in numerous wars, white to abolition of the monarchy and black should commemorate the monarchy and the period of British colonialism.
